be accompanied by an adult.
Much of the ship will be open to visitors, both during dockside tours and for
the Living History Cruise. The BROWN is a fully operational and seaworthy World
War II-era cargo ship. You may tour museum spaces, crew quarters, bridge, radio
room, chart room, messrooms, troop berthing areas, stern gun deck, engine room,
etc. Please note that, for reasons of safety, children under age 12 are not
permitted to visit the engine room. A few additional areas of the ship are
off-limits to all visitors, either for safety considerations or for the privacy
of our crew.
The Ship's Store will be open each day where you can purchase souvenirs of
your visit.
The BROWN's visit to Providence is at the invitation of the Steamship Historical Society of America, which is headquartered in East
Providence, Rhode Island, as part of the Society's celebration of its 75th anniversary.
Providence is also significant in maritime history as the site of the
Walsh-Kaiser shipyard, which built Liberty ships and other vessels during
World War II. With its voyage to Providence, JOHN W. BROWN will have visited each of the seven East
Coast cities having shipyards that built Liberty ships. Other shipyards on the Gulf and West Coasts
also built Liberty ships.
